Timeline of important events in ION's History
1997
A collaboration between ten community colleges and the University
of Illinois. Sylvia Manning, Charles Evans, Burks Oakley.
Illinois Online Network web site created providing
information about the ION, documentation, workshop presentations, and
links to useful software and to online courses that represent best practices.
First on-site workshop given.
1998
Creation of a mailing list for disseminating information to ION
faculty, administrators, and technical staff.
The first Faculty Summer Institute was held in Champaign, IL (May).
1999
“Online Learning: an Overview,” the first course developed for
the Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality online program was
offered for the first time in the Spring of 1999. The course was taught
by Jennifer Lieberman.
Technology Tools for Online Learning (Fall) and Web Design Principles
for Online Educators (Fall) were introduced into the MVCR program.
The first “Pointer and Clicker” article was published on the
ION Web site.
2000
Student Assessment for Online Courses (Spring), Online Learning:
An Overview for Administrators, Issues and Strategies for Faculty
Training (Spring) were introduced into the MVCR program
MVCR courses taught by Adjunct Instructors. Mike
McNett taught OO in the spring of 2000.
MVCR Courses are offered for Continuing Education
Unit credit.
Virtual Guest Lecturer Series – As part of the MVCR online courses,
ION has begun publishing a series of virtual guest lectures. The
lecturers are all distinguished faculty members or staff who provide
information about their area of expertise in online teaching and learning.
After completion of the course, the lectures are available to anyone
over the Internet.
The Illinois Online Network website was awarded the “Exemplary
Online Education Resource award” by the WebCT Online Teaching and Learning
Newsletter editors based on the “the depth and breadth of resources
[the web site] supplies.”
Case Studies in Online Education published for the
first time (September).
2001
Copyright, the TEACH Act, and Intellectual Property Issues in
Education offered for the first time in the Spring. Encouraging
Communications in Online Courses (summer), Practicum (summer), Instructional
Design
for Online Course Development (spring).
Master Online Teacher Certificate program announced. (January)
The first Faculty Trainer's Institute held in Champaign, Illinois.
(January)
Website awarded Technology Source Spotlight Site
for May/June 2001.
Impact Study conducted (September) to evaluate how MVCR and the
FSI has affected faculty's development and delivery of online courses.
2002
Multimedia Principles for Online Educators added in the Spring.
ION receives the award for Excellence in ALN Faculty Development
from the Sloan Consortium.
MVCR Courses available for academic credit through UIS.
2003
In the summer of 2003, ION published a research paper on an overview
of the evaluation of our program that led to the title of exemplary
faculty development program by the SLOAN-Consortium.
2004
Time Management for Online Instructors offered for the first
time in the spring. Tutoring Online: Principles and Practice
offered for the first time in the summer. Advanced Online Seminar
program begins.
ION begins Faculty Development Community of Practice.
ION begins using Elluminate Live to deliver real-time virtual discussion and interaction in MVCR courses.
2005
ION begins to use Moodle as the Course Management System for the MVCR program.
ION offers first Webinar in April. Kevin Johnson presents on Icebreakers.
ION Instructor Virgil Varvel wins WebCT Exemplary Course Award.
