The Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) series of
online faculty development courses is designed to help students and faculty
members acquire the skills and
knowledge needed to teach and learn online, to help staff and administration
support online education, to improve the quality of online education across
the globe, and to research the online teaching and learning context.
The
first course in the series, an eight-week class entitled Online Learning:
An
Overview, was introduced in the Spring
of
1999. Since
then, the MVCR catalog has continued to expand. Courses may now be
taken for either Continuing Education Units (CEU's) or for college credit
from the University of Illinois at Springfield. For more information about
MVCR and how you can enroll, see the prospective
students' section.
The Master Online Teacher Certificate
The Master Online Teacher Certificate is a comprehensive faculty development
program based upon the MVCR series of online faculty development courses.
After successfully completing 4 required courses, one elective, and the Practicum,
you will be awarded the Master of Online Teaching certificate.

ION has conducted evaluations of its major programs including
the MVCR courses to determine their effectiveness and to improve their quality.
The results of those evaluations are presented below.

The MVCR program has also won various awards including the WebCT
Exemplary Online Education Resource for 2000 (a program they have
discontinued for
the Exemplary
Course Project) and the prestigious Award for Excellence in ALN Faculty
Development (in conjunction with other ION programs) from
the Sloan-consortium in 2002. One of our instructors, Virgil Varvel, won
the WebCT Exemplary Online Course Award for an MVCR course
as well.
