Absolute eye-openers! Before I took them, I wasn't even
asking the right questions about teaching online.
Michael McNett is an excellent role model for course instructors.
I am teaching now and sometimes stop and consider, "What
would Mike do in this situation?" I am not so sure of
the influence of the courses as much as it is the people
teaching/facilitating them! Thanks for letting me express
this!
They showed me many options to doing something I would not
have known were available.
They have helped me to better organize online courses and
understand where online teaching differs from onground, and
where it is the same. Also, the experience of taking an online
course helped me to understand how things look from the student
perspective.
Courses were highly interactive before MVCR.
I have taken 10 courses through the MVCR program and have
been able to improve my teaching because of their efforts.
In each course I was able to walk away with ideas for my
own work and the practicum allowed me to apply the skills
to a course module.
I think that others who are doing training such as this
should follow the MVCR model.
I believe the courses have increased my educational vocabulary,
increased the tools I use in my courses, provide me with
an understanding of the difference between online and f2f,
and all and all made me a better instructor.
MVCR faculty are role models that I used to develop my online
teaching style. Additionally, the structure of the courses,
with a focus on communication has helped me improved the
quantity and quality of online communication in my online
courses.
I wouldn't be teaching online if I hadn't completed these
courses as a student. It saved me a lot of time because
I was able to avoid mistakes I would have made without the
knowledge, experience, and empathy I gained form the MVCR
classes.
Question 2 is problematic as I did not teach online until
I had a MVCR course. It is a big part of the process that
boosted my confidence level to agree to undertake this change
in teaching.
I am less convinced that discussions and group activities
are an essential part of teaching online -- even though the
MVCR courses all emphasize those aspects. I'm working to
make the online experience valuable on an individual basis,
and will downplay the importance of interaction -- though
not interactivity -- in courses I'm developing for the future.
The courses I have taken so far have been excellent! I
have learned so much that I can utilize in my own classes,
and I truly believe I'm teaching better on-line because of
them!! I'm very satisfied, and am looking forward to taking
the rest!!
Excellent instructor and ideas for teaching online. Loved
the group project
The likelihood of taking the MVCR having an impact on my
teaching would have been greatly improved if the MVCR instructor
had responded to the questions posted by the class. In most
cases, the instructor did not reply -- even when the question
was posted with a direct request for a response and a reminder
that the class was waiting. In addition, chat did not work
as it was supposed to.
I think your survey would be improved by asking about the
experience in the MVCR course as well as the impact it had. I
don't think the MVCR experience that I had was a ""good
online experience"" according to the readings we
did on the topic.
With each course, I modified my original design. I am now
very proud of the quality of online instruction I offer my
students. I would not have been able to accomplish this
without MVCR.
I was not sure if I was doing things right in the online
environment. After taking these ION classes, I have more
confidence that I am doing things right and also have many
more tools on doing things better. GREAT CLASSES!!!
A great help!!
It was very good to experience the student side of an online
course.
I am impressed with the instructors ... I think that they
are very qualified.
MVCR courses have introduced me to the concept of online
teaching. I have learned many new technologies that I plan
to use in my face-to-face classes until I can create my own
online course. Thanks for this opportunity.
MVCR courses have taught me so many things. They are the
very best education courses I have ever taken and prepare
us well to teach online by example. The interaction between
classmates and instructors is extremely valuable. Thank
you all!
MVCR has provided me with good sound teaching online methods.
However since my courses are enhanced and the students see
each one another in other classes, often I have found that
they do the group discussions off line and then just post
their assignments. Also these students often still complain
about technology problems. Many of my students still do
not have computers and consantly change their email addresses.
The MVCR course gives me a wonderfully experience un synchronous,
asynchronous, collaborative discussions, and critique. It
also increases my skills in deep thinking and, quick response.
I wish to get the opportunity to continue studying the other
courses.
my skill level has been significantly increased because
of the courses and I am grateful that they have been here
to help me increase my education and skills in online course
delivery
The MVCR courses have, and still are equipping me with the
necessary tools for effective online facilitation.
They provided a rich collaborative atmosphere to share experiences
and knowledge with other students/instructors. Class materials
and resources were extremely valuable and I refer to them
often in developing/enhancing my online courses.
MVCR have improved the way I teach both online as well as
face to face classes.
I have adopted a few very important ideas which I learned
in my MVCR courses into my online courses, such as adding
online rubrics, assigning discussion questions to individual
students rather than always letting them select discussion
questions, incorporating group projects. While all of my
attempts have not gone smoothly, getting ideas from the courses
I took was very helpful. I would love to take another class
in the future for that reason.
I have a better idea of what I should be doing. The problem
is finding time to revise the course.
I was in the planning stage for my first online course when
I took my first MVCR course. After the MVCR course, I totally
revamped my plan for my online course and it was much better
as a result. It was extremely beneficial to have the experience
as a student online and gain the knowledge from that first
MVCR course.
Your courses are most helpful because the concepts are conveyed,
the practices are demonstrated and the skills are improved.
These are all centered on the theme of the course and tailored
to the needs of the participants. The interaction with other
students informs us of the varying issues, concerns and needs
across the spectrum.
Thanks for asking.
I feel like a trained professional instead of someone who
is guessing at it!!!
I'm just finishing my mvcr class, but its already given
me some great ideas.
My course gave me information and confidence with implementing
course policies in my online course.
I feel more confident in teaching online courses after participating
in the online course from both the student perspective with
various activities and the teacher perspective with various
activities.
Every instructor I've had (5 courses) has been fabulous,
and I love the fact that they all stress interactivity in
the online classroom. Because of that, I've learned a great
deal from my fellow classmates as well. Thank you for this
wonderful program!
I am not sure how I would have done before taking MVCR courses,
but I now know that I am on the right track in how I am teaching
online.
Before staring the MVCR course, I felt hesitant about the
underlying assumption that interactivity was an essential
part of online experience. After taking two courses, I have
even more doubts about the connection between interactivity
and learning. In both courses, interactivity seemed to be
viewed as a highly correlated activity that would produce
very positive outcomes. I question the correlation. I have
not seen any studies which suggest that interactivity is
an essential part of online experience. I think that interaction
between students and instructors need to be tied to task
accomplishment. If interaction can be beneficial, use it. If
it is detrimental, then don't use it.
Emphasis on collaborative discussions. Use of research projects.
Some of the courses have group activities every week. Although
those activities allow me to interact with members of the
group, they distance me from the rest of the class. Some
courses use the same group throughout the semester. Sometimes
I feel that I am stuck with a certain member who is not very
active.
Finally, MVCR instructors should encourage students to provide
a constructive comment to each other. I know that most instructors
do say that we need to give useful feedback; however, I still
see some students who simply reply ""I agree"" or ""that's
a great idea"" without a rationale or further comments.
I found that type of responses annoying and waste of my time
since clicking into each message takes time. I think some
point should be taken off from those who often post those
non-value added responses.
