Molly Herman Baker, Ph.D., is the Director of the Teaching/Learning Center and Online Learning at Black Hawk College in Moline, IL. As an instructional designer, specializing in teaching/training with technology, especially at a distance, she has been teaching and training nearly all of her professional life. She has worked for the Girl Scouts as an adult development specialist, for Western Illinois University as Director of Faculty Support for Technology Integration and as a faculty member and graduate coordinator in the Instructional Technology and Telecommunications Department. She has also operated her own consulting firm, New Leaf LearningDesigns.

Dan has spent the last 15 years teaching, training and exploring the nuances of designing engaging learning events. He has an MA in Adult Education and has worked in K-12, higher education, corporate and non-profit environments including a three year teaching assignment in Chad, Central Africa.

For several years, Dan developed and delivered workshops for online faculty in the community college system of Illinois. Currently he is engaged in another statewide professional development initiative through the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy which focuses on assisting educators to develop skills in digital information fluency - ie. searching, evaluating and ethically using digital resources for teaching and learning. As a learning architect, Dan continously explores pedagogical approaches, such as scenarios and storytelling, that connect learning to life.

Jeffrey Bathe is the Director of Instructional Technology and Alternative Delivery at Kankakee Community College. He also provides instruction for the Illinois Online Network's MVCR program and teaches faculty development workshops throughout the state of Illinois, both online and face-to-face, on such topics as adapting curriculum and effective uses of technology tools. He received his B.A. and M.S. from Western Illinois University and is currently pursuing his Ed.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Community College Leadership.

Diana Billeter currently teaches full time in the Business and Computing Technology (BCT) lab at Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, IL. She is also the coordinator for the BCT labs on all three Carl Sandburg College locations. Her educational background includes a bachelor of science from Illinois State University in business education and a master’s degree from Western Illinois University in instructional technology and telecommunications. Over the past decade, she has been a certified trainer for several different software packages and traveled across the state conducting training workshops.

Steve Campbell is an Assistant Professor in his fifth year in the Business Division at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL. Steve is the program coordinator for the Web Design and Computer Graphics programs. Prior to that, he was the Webmaster for LCCC and was Assistant Director of the Media Services Department. Steve has his Masters degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in Instructional Technology. He currently teaches classes using Adobe Photoshop, ImageReady and Illustrator; Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash; Microsoft FrontPage; and QuarkXPress. Steve is married to a high school instructor of English, Public Speaking and Debate (for 21 years!) and is the proud father of four teenage children.

After living in Illinois for 27 years and being a member of the Harper College faculty for 16 years, I have relocated to the Baltimore/D.C. area where I am a Distance Learning Counselor. I have earned a certificate in Online Teaching from UCLA and a Master’s Degree from George Washington University in Educational Technology Leadership in addition to my counseling degree. Somehow, I have been able to find a way to combine all of my professional interests. While I have been an online teacher for several organizations, it is a pleasure to be back where it all started – ION.

Since 1980, I've been a full-time instructor of speech and theater at Triton College. I teach in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department which offers interdisciplinary packages of general education courses in communications, fine arts, social and behavioral sciences and humanities. Department members collaborate in curriculum and lesson planning, assignments and exams, the assessment of learners, team teaching, etc. In 1998, we moved our learning community to an online format preserving the interdisciplinary mandate and connecting the virtual community of online learners to the classroom community of on-campus learners. I teach online theater courses in this Community Of One model. Additionally, I teach what is somewhat of a rarity -- online public speaking courses. I also teach the Encouraging Communications course in the MVCR program.

I have also been involved (in the past) with the International Programs office of Eastern until I returned to teaching, so I am particularly interested in combining my knowledge of the international world with my teaching. I currently teach English Composition, Research writing, Intro to Literature, Creative Writing (fiction and poetry), Bible as Literature, Children’s Literature and Developmental English. Fortunately, I don’t teach them all at one time. I recently completed my on line teaching certification through the University of Illinois, Springfield. By combining my fascination with technology with my love of teaching, I have the best of both worlds.

Leaunda Hemphill teaches instructional design and technology-integration courses to undergraduate and graduate students in Instructional Technology and Telecommunications Department at Western Illinois University. Dr. Hemphill provides training to higher education faculty and develops online and face-to-face professional development curriculum and workshops. Her research interests include developing effective measures for improving online student learning, using adaptive learning strategies for computer-based and online instruction, and improving techniques for integrating technology into the K12 classroom. Dr. Hemphill’s educational background is in instructional technology, distance education, secondary education, and the theory and practice of writing.

Rodger Hergert is an associate professor of mathematics at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois. He is also an instructor in the Illinois Online Network’s Making the Virtual Campus a Reality series of online faculty development courses. In addition, he has presented face-to-face workshops on adapting courses to the online environment at community colleges across Illinois. On the Rock Valley campus, he has been a leader in the online program having served as Distance Learning Committee chair for several years, as well as holding the position of Coordinator of Alternative Delivery from 2000-2002.

My interest in technology began when I was very young. At 15, I was a programmer for the University of Illinois developing online study materials. Since then, I have taught in both academic and corporate environments. In an effort to save paper, I started providing lecture notes and other resources on CDs. As the Internet emerged, I was asked to teach a web development course. It was a natural transition for me to move from burning CDs to placing content on the web. Before I knew it, I was interacting with students electronically and my career in online education began.

I am in my sixth year of teaching graphic design at Elgin Community College, specializing in web design and multimedia. I received a BA in Art from Blackburn College and an MFA in Painting from Northern Illinois University. I worked at the Art Institute of Chicago for a number of years, and then moved to Paris to work as an artist in the atelier Europe Factory. Upon returning to Chicago during the infancy of the internet, my career turned towards web design, followed by teaching and online education. I completed ION's Master of Online Teaching certificate last year and currently have the privilege to work with a supportive team of faculty and administrators to advance our school's online program.

Janice taught for 24 years in the Medical Laboratory Program at Illinois Central College. She now serves as the Director of Instructional Innovation, Faculty Development and Learning Resources working with faculty offering professional development opportunities with an emphasis in online learning. She has worked collaboratively with 3 other MLT Programs in IL to place the medical laboratory curriculum online. Janice has presented at state/national clinical laboratory science conferences, the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators, Illinois Connections Conference, the League for Innovation, previous FSI’s, and the Illinois Online Conference on topics in faculty development, online learning, and clinical laboratory science.


Dr. Susan S. Ko

Dr. Susan Schor Ko has a doctorate in Chinese literature from Yale University and spent over 10 years teaching in the California State University system. She began teaching online in 1997 and was responsible for developing and teaching several of the core courses in UCLA Extension's pioneering online teaching certificate program. She worked for several years in the private sector as Director of Online Curriculum and Instructor Development with OnlineLearning.net, and later as VP of Online Program Design for Sylvan's Online Higher Education. Since 2003, Dr. Ko has been Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (http://www.umuc.edu/facdev) at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), where she leads the unit providing faculty development training and support to UMUC's worldwide faculty. Dr. Ko is co-author with Steve Rossen of a leading book on the subject of online teaching entitled Teaching Online: A Practical Guide, now in its 2nd edition from Houghton Mifflin.

Michael W. Lindeman is Program Director of Illinois Online Network. As an advocate for technology, Ms. Mulcrone maintains a resource on the City Colleges' Course Management System (CMS), BlackBoard, for the Wright faculty; presented enhancements to teaching; and provide individual assistance with technological and pedagogical assistance.

Burks Oakley II is an Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois. He serves as the director of the University of Illinois Online initiative, a program designed to facilitate the development and delivery of University of Illinois courses and degrees over the Internet. Oakley also holds an academic appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

Through his innovative use of educational technologies and the Internet in teaching, Professor Oakley has earned a national reputation as a practitioner and promoter of asynchronous online learning environments. In the past six years, he has given more than two hundred invited talks at national conferences and on university campuses. He has been the PI or co-PI on over $10 million in grants (including matching funds) to the University of Illinois in support of online educational initiatives.

James Paradiso is a Professor of Business Management at the College of Lake County (CLC) in Grayslake, Illinois. Before joining CLC's faculty, Jim taught at five universities and developed educational products for local divisions of two NY-based publishers. I am an online education specialist for the University of Illinois. I have an M.S. in Biomolecular Chemistry and an M.Ed. in Math, Science, and Technology Education. Currently finishing my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, my research includes the effects of online education instruction to offline education practice and one's knowledge of others through text-based communication. Previous work has included the evaluation of wireless networks in classrooms and of training programs. Dr. Peter Williams received the Ph.D. in adult learning and distance education from Texas A&M. He has taught sixth grade, taught ESL in Honduras , and coordinated programs in state prison schools. He has coordinated online training programs at the Center for Distance Learning Research at Texas A&M and directing all distance learning programs at Rogers State University in Oklahoma which included seven completely online degrees. Now he consults on elearning and training issues. He has published in professional journals and made presentations at international conferences.
