Nidhal Guessoum is an Astrophysicist, who received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at San Diego and spent two years as a post-doctoral researcher at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. He has taught at institutions of higher learning in Algeria, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE); until recently he headed the physics department at the American University of Sharjah (UAE). His research interests range from the scientific (gamma-ray astrophysics) to the cultural (Islamic calendar, crescent visibility, Islamic cosmologies, etc.) and educational. He is nearing completion of his Master Certificate in Online Teaching with the University of Illinois Online Network. He has recently focused special attention on educational issues related to higher education (American model vs. Arab/European model, academic freedom and its limits, etc.).
