Grading Forums in Moodle
When creating a forum in Moodle, you simply provide who will
be able to grade the forum (can be instructor or peers) and how many points
can be assigned. This value will be the maximum possible for that person
in the given forum. But how does Moodle determine the final grade.
When grading Moodle forums, the maximum grade that someone
can get will be what you (or one of us) entered when creating the forum.
So if the discussion is worth 5 points, the maximum that the student can
get is 5 points. Independent of how many posts that a person has or even
how many threads a person begins in a particular forum, the score
will be an average of the grades on the posts and only the posts for which
grades
have been entered. It is not a cumulative total.
Example:
Scenario 1 – 1 assignment in a given forum. If you only enter a grade
for one of the student posts, no matter which one it is, then that will be
his/her grade. But what if you grade twice. In the scenario below, let’s
say that I give a 4/5 for the original post, but the student then adds a
post later which I give a 5 to. The final grade would be a 4.5. To give the
student a 5, I have to grade in such a way that the final average is 5. So
I could change the first grade to a 5 and not give anything on the second
posting, or make sure that all posts have the same score.
Student A posts – starts with a 4 (would need to change to a 5 in
order to average a 5)

Student A clarifies
Student B posts

Student A posts again – gets a 5
Scenario 2 – 2 assignments in a given forum. In such a case, you cannot
give just the credit for the given assignment for each post, but the grade
has to be a total
Total = 5 per assignment or 10
Student A posts assignment 1 – grade
5
Student A posts assignment 2 – grade 5
Final grade would be a 5
Student A posts assignment 1 – grade 10
Student A posts assignment 2 – grade 10
Final grade would be a 10
Student A posts assignment 1 – no grade
Student A posts assignment
2 – grade 10
Final grade would be a 10
Scenario 3 – Changing a grade in any of the above instances.
Student A posts – grade 5
Student A posts again – grade 9
Final grade would be 7 or an average
of 5 and 9. In order for the student to get a 9, change the 5 to a 9 or give
both posts a 9.
Scenario 4 – Removing a grade
Student A posts – grade 5
Student A posts again – grade 9
You then change the grade on the first
post from a 5 to “no grade”
Final grade would be a 4.5
Note: Once a grade has been entered, it cannot be removed.
It will only be changed to a 0 (at least that is what happened when I tried).
You would have to then
go back into the first post and give it a grade of 9 in order to bring the
final grade up to a 9.
